Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Organised  and headed under Dr. Agatha  Moniz, MD, MRCOG. The other staff includes Dr. Shirly John, MD, DGO &  Dr. Sophie Mathew, MBBS,DNB. Its a High risk pregnancy centre  with Infertility Clinic apart from routine general problems, employing state  of the art facilities including cardiotocography,  ultrasound and colour doppler studies and also performing all kinds of Laparoscopic  and Hysteroscopic Surgeries. Balloon Thermal  Ablation is also done which alleviate the need for  hysterectomy  in dysfunctional utering bleeding. Laparoscopic  hysterectomy  and other  laparoscopic  surgeries is now done with Harmonic Scapel which is safer and Post Operative healing is quicker and pain  is minimized.

The growth and overall well being of the fetus is regularly monitored  where  appropriate using ultrasound  and cardiotocography during  the pregnancy period and especially nearing labour providing  correlated  graphic records of  uterine contraction  and fetal well being. This enables in identifying and managing those pregnancies  which  are high risk  like hypertension,  diabetes, jaundice in pregnancy, multiple pregnancies, premature pregnancy, etc. The well supported neonatal unit ensures that the resulting baby is well looked after.

The facilities for computerised tread mill test, Holter monitoring, Echo cardiography etc and a intensive coronory care unit (ICCU) under efficient professionals like Dr. D.V. Nair, MD, MRCP, FRCP, FACC and Dr. Joy George, MD. The department identifies and manage challenges posed by the growing number of people with cardiac diseases.

The coronory care unit provides for pulmonary artery widge pressure work arterial pressure, non invasive arterial pressure, latest arrykmia detection algorithm to diagnose and treat arrykmias. Invasive transuinous pacemaker for urgent implantation in patients with heart block. Cardioverter defibrillator with external pacer for emergency treatment of tachy arrykmias and brady arrykmias respectively. 

Two volume cycled state of art ventilation on for emergency recuralation and respiratory support. Centralised Oxygen/suction facility are available in the ICCU.

The department is headed by Dr. Sanjay Mammen MD. It  facilities comprehensive preventive and curative skin care for all varieties of  skin problems. Dermato histopathologic, Cytologic and other Immuno diagnostic procedures are undertaking  routinely apart from expertise in Electrolysis, Electrocauterisation and Chemical cauterisation. Expert neonatal and paediatric skin care is a highlight of the department.

Headed by Dr.Sujit Vasudevan MD who  is  renowned  for his accomplishment in the field. The department is conducting  exhaustive  evaluation of diabetes  to  assess  the level  of control which helps to detect complications if any and counselling clinic which is a comprehensive package for diabetic patients. The evaluation includes the tests  like  Glycosylated Heamoglobin (To assess the degree of control), Urine analysis, Microalbuminuria  (To determine kidney involvement), Blood  Urea, Serum  Creatinine, Doppler studies  (To determine circulatory problems), Biothesiometry (To check nerve function), Haemoglobin, Cholestrol etc. Any additonal dietary advice and necessary  teaching will also be provided by our Diabetic Clinic.

This department is headed by Ms.Reshmi P MA, M Phil  and provides  psychological evaluation and rehabilitation of adults and especially for children. The department is well supported by a  team  of  Special Educators and Remedial Educators  to  help children with Dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

The department is piloted by Dr.Sujit Vasudevan MD and Dr. Shyamala Menon. Its a specialised centre for accurate  medical  evaluation and treatment.

Dr. Prof. C K Ramachandran MBBS (Madras), FRCP (EDIN) MRCP (London), MRCP (Glasgow), DTMH (England), one of the most renounced General Physicians among the Medical fraternity and the Son of late Sri. Chenganezhatu Krishnan Vaidyan is joining PVS Memorial Hospital, Cochin on 20th August 2006. He was practicing as a General Physician in PVS Hospital, Calicut for the past few years and is quite well-known for his approach towards the treatment.

He has combined Ayurveda and Modern Medicine to treat his patients. He used Modern medicine & infrastructure for the diagnosis of diseases & ailments and treated it with a combination of ayurvedic and modern medicine techniques. His has chosen a holistic approach, where he believes that it is the approach and not the type of medicine which result in the final cure of an ailment. He also believes that the most important duty of the doctor is to teach the patients and not the treatment. This solves half his problems.

Having a rich ayurvedic tradition of 5 generations and an in-depth knowledge of modern medicine and its possibilities, acquired through his studies, He was able to blend ayurveda and modern medicine to create better results.

He has practiced along with Sir. Henhil, Physician to Queen, for 6 months in 1959, has been a Medical Registrar in London University College and has also taught the students in DTLMH for 2 years.

After coming back to Kerala in 1960, He joined Calicut Medical College as an Assistant Professor in 1961 and retired as a professor in 1981. Giving due respect to his relationship with Sri. PV Sami, he extended his service to PVS Hospital, Calicut thereafter.

He has done researches in the Holy Quran & Holy Bible and tried to find out the roots of diseases & its cures and also found out the applications of science ant that time. He used to take classes on the religious books and the quotes from these books which state the different instances where the science is applied. His students were inspired by his findings and efforts towards this. He believes that the basis of all religion is the same when it comes to science.

He has taken a major role in the promotion of Musical and ayurvedic societies & organizations and has written some books on medicine in Malayalam one of his books named ‘ Vaidya Sashtram pudiya nootandukalilude’ released in 2002 has got Sahitya Acadamy Award.

The range of Anaesthesiology support given to neonatal and paediatric  surgery  with an excellent neonatal intensive  care  unit which  is a referral centre and for Gastroenterology surgery  is unparalleled.  The department is suitably staffed to ensure  the presence of anaesthesiologist through out the course of each surgery.

SUPPORT SERVICES

Lab : The laboratory is equipped with the best of equipments and highly  skilled personnel facilitating very accurate  and  quick test results. It is a integrated unit of Biochemistry,  Clinical Pathology, Haemotology, Histopapthology, Microbiology and other general  and specialised groups. The staffing is done in such  a way  to  provide 'on time' results to  facilitate  accurate and timely diagnosis by the doctors.

X-ray : The department is equipped and staffed to carry out  all routine  X-rays. It also supports for procedures like ERCP, Dye Study through contrast media and barium studies, T-tube cholangiogram etc using Image Intensifier C-arm. It also caters for  the specialised  X-ray requirements of the dental unit and  neonates using mobile x-ray units.

Casualty : This is a 24 hours service unit staffed to  meet  the requirements of various emergency situations and is also supported by the doctors on call from various departments during night.

Pharmacy : This is a 24 hour service unit and fully stocked with all types of  medicines  and vaccines  etc  required  for the patients  and  especially  keeps highly advanced life saving drugs mostly used by Super speciality departments.

Dietetics  and  Canteen : The menu of all the  patients  is  prescribed  by the dietary department considering the  specific requirements  of each patient based on their  physiological conditions.  The department also advise and enforce guidelines on the composition of each item of the menu ensuring a balanced diet  in the general and staff canteen which also caters for the needs  of all the patients. It also advices on the general hygiene  during the preparation and serving all food in the canteen as well as to the  patients. It provides specialised councelling for patients as per their requirements and for those under the diabetic evaluation clinic.

Ambulance Service : It provides 24 hours ambulance service. The hospital  is planning to extend the scope of this  department by providing specially equipped ambulance unit for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation of the patient at the sight of emergency, emergencies related to high risk labour and shifting of Neonates. School of Nursing : The school of Nursing under the auspicious of Madhavi Sami Memorial School of Nursing imparts training leading to  Diploma in General Nursing and Mid Wifery Integrated Course approved by the Kerala Nurses & Midwifes Council. It is  staffed with  highly skilled teachers providing the students  a  thorough knowledge  on the subject and related aspects and imbibing  hands on training in handling various medical emergencies fully utilising the state of the art facilities available in the hospital and also familiarising them in various systems and quality assurance procedures.
